We wrap up the third season with a discussion of its inaugural topic–pace of play. MLB’s games are shorter this season and the “boring” moniker has dropped from the press. While this result satisfies the dignified MLB, fewer headlines would drive the NFL nuts. The NFL is a rank belcher of headlines, a disposable product, which portends its decline in cultural influence. The balk and check-swing tell the story of this week’s abomination: how complex rules in football are prosecuted to their fullest extent and in full view but in baseball act as an invisible bulwark against which the game may confidently proceed in an unfettered aesthetically pleasing display. And, it’s pleasing to tell football to suck it!
