Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 13

What can critics tell us about art or sports? Is there value in criticism that tears down immortal works of civilization instead of finding creative ways to describe them? Wait–are we saying that to tear down, or “tackling,” is less interesting than a more creative narrative, or “arc?” In other words, is a football play less interesting than a soaring baseball? Hell yes! Football sucks!

Adversity defines us all. Was it Sartre who said that? Anyway, S&K rip you out of today’s existential preoccupation to talk about how adversity gives rise to sports and how it plays out in ways minute and gross within the games, all while caressing your ears with baseball thoughts and well-timed curse words. If you wonder what adversity does to football, look no further than your nearest emergency room!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 11

All this time at home has bred new obsessions, and today one emerges–Beethoven–as the topic and what he might have to do with other types of music, or sports? Declaring which human might be the best at any given trade or art is always problematic. Discussing the scope of this idea raises many interesting questions but leaves one certainty undisturbed and unequivocal. Football sucks!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 10

Sports have resumed but aren’t the usual thrill, so the search for competitive activity takes the S&K duo into e-sports and a massively attended League of Legends tournament. Exciting is not the word for the almost purely chaotic gameplay, building on football’s supposed strength in random acts of violence, but really falling short of being able to produce any aesthetically appealing motion or outcomes. E- or no, sports like this should suck it!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 9

For perhaps the first time this podcast has standards. But they are the kind found in music. We all know about the jazz “standard” found in the so-called Great American Songbook, but what about rock and other styles? Despite the topic, the podcast is still an unapologetic crudity, and that’s because we need to be able to express how much football sucks!

You demanded it! Another episode that tracks a baseball video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-L8AIE9wKs. This time it’s a little league game. The S&K duo expands on an early idea that the fully expressed aesthetic of a baseball game takes place among young participants as opposed to football, whose rules must be drastically changed to play it in a backyard or youth league. This episode delves interestingly into an idea about when a professional’s habits or techniques take hold. How young? When does football suck it? Always!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 7

Still no sports, but there’s plenty to rant about here on the S&K pod, such as the city versus the suburbs. Need we say more? Each member of the S&K team is eyeing potential new real estate and the topic is ripe. Obviously the suburbs’ false promises of fulfilled dreams will be exposed as lies just as the suburbanite’s sport of choice constantly betrays itself as a wretched fraud! Suck it, football!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 6

Wow! Watch a video and listen to S&K at the same time? This episode’s discussion follows the action of Game 6 of the 1985 World Series (listen to the pod for exact timing): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Tml85ySvzs. Did a blown call at first “cost” the Cards the series? The discussion evaluates how a moment in sports legend actually looked in real time and whether its reputation is justified. You know whose reputation is justified? Football’s! It sucks!

The S&K duo find more ways to talk about music. In some ways, the previous episodes built their emotional fortitude for this profound moment: reading and reacting to Billy Joel’s wikipedia page. Hear these mega-fans expound on the Piano Man’s career. And just as Billy can express a complex idea in the straightest of terms, football can suck it (in the simplest of terms)!

Suck it, Coronavirus! ep. 4

The Ramones are the greatest American rock band and football is the suckiest American sport. But this pod goes beyond that simple truth to hear from the local S&K expert on his hometown’s weird but explosive rock act, and tells how their humble efforts to emulate the Beatles led to a paradigmatic shift in music, ‘cool’ and more!
